​The McElderry of McElderry & Morris was John Harris McElderry, born in Guelph in 1981. Mr. McElderry was drafted to the 1st Tank Battalion in World War 1 in 1918. He was discharged in 1919 and shortly after, was called to the bar. After practicing law for two years in Toronto, Mr. McElderry opened a law office in Guelph in 1921, eventually settling at the firm’s present location at 84 Woolwich Street in the 1950s. In 1958, Mr. McElderry was appointed Queen's Counsel. Mr. McElderry remained with the firm until his death in 1973.

The Morris of McElderry & Morris was Patrick John Morris, born in Peel Township in 1923. Mr. Morris attended the Ontario Agricultural College and then Osgoode Hall Law school, graduating in 1949. Mr. Morris began his practice in St. Catharines, Fergus and Kitchener, before moving to Guelph and joining Mr. McElderry in 1954, thus creating McElderry & Morris. Mr. Morris retired from the firm in 2007.

In 1963, Mr. McElderry and Mr. Morris were joined by Jerry W. Matthews.  Mr. Matthews was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1960 and briefly worked at a Toronto law firm. In 1961 he opened his practice in Guelph and shortly thereafter joined McElderry & Morris. Mr. Matthews remained with the firm until his retirement in 1993.

In 1966, G. Hayes Murphy joined the firm. Mr. Murphy graduated from Osgood Law School in 1961 and began his law practice in Toronto. Five years later, he joined McElderry & Morris and remained with the firm until his retirement in 2018. 

 

In 1993, Sergio J. Manera joined McElderry & Morris.  Sons of Mr. Morris and Mr. Matthews eventually joined the firm as well – current firm members Patrick G. Morris and Gregory G. Matthews.
